How Long Does It Take to Get a CDL

Most new drivers finish their CDL training in four to eight weeks. The time depends on the program, the state’s schedule, and how often you can attend class.

The classroom phase

Schools usually begin with written material. You learn traffic laws, vehicle systems, and safety checks. This stage often lasts one to two weeks. Some programs let you study part-time, which can stretch the schedule.

Behind-the-wheel training

After the written test, you practice driving a tractor-trailer under supervision. Full-time students often complete this in two to four weeks. Those who train on weekends may need six to eight weeks.

Testing and licensing

When you finish training, you take a skills test at a state site. The wait for test appointments can add a week or two. If you pass, you’ll receive your CDL on the same day or within a few days by mail.

Extra endorsements

If you plan to drive hazardous materials or buses, you’ll need extra written exams. Each endorsement may add several days to the process.
